Seoyoung Back is a writer whose theme is 'Dancheong', Korean traditional multicolored paintwork on wooden buildings, through which we can transcend time and space.
'Dancheong', with grandeur of symmetry and complexity, has been a work of art of the Korean people, expressing one of the most Korean beauty . She tried to express this legacy of the past 'Dancheong' in a stylish way of modern times.
She uses 'Dancheong' as a medium connecting the past and the present, the East and the West. There is a Dancheong pattern called 'golden pattern', which often appears in her work.
'Golden pattern' has a meaning that repeated and connected patterns continue co and do not break. Modern representation can be summarized as a continuous pattern in which geometric characteristics are combined.
In order to highlight the meaning of 'golden gate', the connection of a bridge in her work is included.
By combining the golden gate of the past with the emphasized modern sculpture, she tries to express the transcendence of time.
In addition, Dancheong, which was not only suitable to palaces, was painted on historic Western buildings such as the Eiffel Tower and Opera House on her work.
Through this, not only Koreans but also visitors around the world were able to familiarize themselves with the most Korean style, and to draw the transcendence of the space connecting the East and the West.
Finally, what I wanted to express through all the works is 'symmetry'.
The old palaces, which are buildings coated with dancheong, are also perfectly symmetrical in the form of the same roof tiles and buildings on both sides.
I thought that the dignity of traditional architecture stems not only from its huge and majestic scale, but also from this symmetry, so I tried to capture it on a small canvas.
